Motive: When designing a one page dungeon as homework for
our CTIN488 class, I just really don’t like how generic each one page dungeon
turned out to be. Sure, it was a story about you travelling in space trying to
save stuff, but what is the fun part of making your own dungeon if you don’t
make something different? While this concept is too crazy to hand in for a
group project, I think it is fine to be developed as an individual dungeon.
Summary: I decided to make a “dungeon” about cooking aliens
in space. Players will have to choose their materials among a bunch of
well-known aliens, cook them, and satisfy the alien judge’s appetite. While
most dungeons are organized as a “map” where player meet the end goal of each
region to get to a different one, my dungeon will be organized as a menu with
raw ingredients, and players need to decide what alien they want, what to cook
those aliens into, and satisfy the judges.
Plot: Four of you are on your spaceship, Stardust Crusader,
when you randomly encounter a space cooking competition. The prize money is
high and the final prize consists of a medicine (which is used as a special
cooking ingredient) that can cure your sick captain’s disease. You need to cook
up one appetizer, one soup or salad, one entree and one desert using provided
ingredients, each will be judged by a different alien cook. If your food
satisfy all judges, you will be deemed as the final winner of the competition.
Ingredients: roll a dice to choose which material you will
get before cooking each dish. Just like players will not know every detail of
each region in a regular dungeon, the detail of each material is not known, and
player have to try to explore what they can do to their cooking material.
Dungeon master can decide whether you can reroll or not when you have an ingredient
for more than once.
1.
1: Frozen xenomorph: don’t be fooled by the
appearance, the xenomorph is very delicious once you know how to deal with its
acidic blood. This one comes freshly out of the North Pole and is deeply
frozen, all valuable parts are preserved and the acidic blood has been washed
away.
2. 2: Living banelings: they are so cute they are
going to explode, and I do mean explode.
Their glowing bodies are filled with nutritious acid that has a fruity
flavor once neutralized, and their claws are very meaty.
-------And this is how I get lazy
- Run out of imagination here for alien type, stop by later to add silly reference to random alien movies
Judge design: do characters with serious personality problems for maximum amount of fun, add weird requirement for food.
Page design: try to mirror a fine restaurant menu with simple text
